What We Believe
What do Lutherans Believe?

Sola Gratia: We are saved by the grace of God alone -- not by anything we do

Sola Fide: Our salvation is through faith alone -- we only need to believe that our sins are forgiven for Christ's sake, who died to redeem us

Sola Scriptura: The Bible is the only norm of doctrine and life -- the only true standard by which teachings and doctrines are to be judged.

Luther also believed that that Scripture and worship needs to be in the language of the people.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has entered into cooperative "full communion" agreements with several other Protestant denominations.

About Martin Luther:
Born November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany. Martin Luther is known as the Father of Protestantism. He studied to become a lawyer before becoming an Augustinian monk in 1505. He was ordained as a priest in 1507 and continued his theological studies in persuit of a Doctor of Theology degree.
He posted his challenge on the church door on October 31, 1517 at the age of 33.
Martin Luther died February 18, 1546.

About the Lutheran Faith

How did the Lutheran Faith come to be?
While in persuit of a Doctor of Theology degree, Martin Luther discovered there were significant differences between what he read in the Bible and the theology and practices of the church.

In response to these differences and to challenge the church to reform, Martin Luther posted a challenge on the church door at Wittenberg University to debate 95 theological issues.

What began as his hope that the church would reform its practice and preaching to become more consistent with the Word of God as contained in the Bible, ended by becoming a seperate Faith, and a continuing reformation, by people who also believe that the practice and preaching should be consistent with the written word of God, which is the Bible.

Learning about the Lutheran Faith Luther's Small Catechism is a book which contains teachings on:

• The Ten Commandments

• The Apostles' Creed

• The Lord's Prayer

• Holy Baptism

• Confession and Absolution

• Holy Communion

• Morning and Evening Prayer
